The McGannon Foundation’s Student Involvement Program is for post-secondary students studying programs in Risk Management, Insurance or related programs. The Foundation is offering a unique opportunity for these students to attend the annual RIMS Canada Conference.

About the Program

At the RIMS Canada Conference, students will learn about risk management and insurance at the educational sessions and network with professionals in all segments of our industry.

This is a great opportunity for students who are enrolled at either Canadian Universities or Community Colleges with a major in finance, management, engineering, safety and loss control, actuarial science, advanced statistics or accounting. All students selected are required to follow a pre-set agenda.

The Foundation will pay for the following expenses for selected applicants:
  • Registration fees
  • Hotel expenses
  • Reasonable transportation costs to and from the conference
  • Reasonable out of pocket expenses incurred during the Conference

Important Dates

  • 2025 Student Involvement Program will take place at the RIMS Canada Conference to be held in Calgary:  September 14-17, 2025
  • Deadline for the application: May 30, 2025

Student Eligibility

  • Students must be over the age of majority in the jurisdiction where the conference will be held
  • Nominated students must be enrolled as full time students. The nominated student’s major must be in finance, management, accounting, actuarial science, statistics, engineering with related courses of risk control or safety, or other related fields of study.
  • Students that have attended a past conference may be eligible for selection to the current conference.
  • Applications must be complete in every respect, and be received by May 31, 2025 or earlier.

Important Information

  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Applicants who are accepted to participate in the Student Involvement Program expressly grant the McGannon Foundation permission to publish their name as a McGannon Scholar on the website and in other written and social media formats.

  • To learn firsthand how the Risk Management & Insurance Society (“RIMS”) works across Canada and the United States.
  • Unique practical opportunities to learn from seasoned professionals just what the risk management process is all about as it pertains to a wide spectrum of businesses and non-profits.
  • Access to a coach and mentor throughout the conference in order to maximize your learning opportunities.
  • Attendance at industry social events to allow for networking in a social setting.

How the Mentor/ Coach Will Help You

  • Available to assist in all your reasonable requests for assistance and answer your questions about the discipline and profession
  • May accompany you to the sessions that you pick out from the Conference Program.
  • Provides opportunities for networking within the industry and introductions to many professionals in the risk management and related support fields.

What the Foundation Expects From You

  • To act appropriately in all social and learning sessions, and to represent your school in a professional manner.
  • To attend all the general and seminar sessions over the two and a half days. (No excuses!)
